It's been a year since WeMartians became a thing. Back then, I was eager to get started and wanted to quickly get a website, a logo and some branding up so I could start making podcasts. At the time I was pretty happy with what I could throw together but looking back, the colours and logos of the past have fallen a little flat.
The website needed work, too. What I thought the website was going to do turned out different once I began. It turns out, running an interactive Mars resource (my initial plans) takes a lot of time, and I had to decide whether to spend time updating it with relevant content or focusing on the podcast. I chose the latter. So the website sat kind of stagnant. The old provider had a weird bug that I couldn't solve either, and the load times were...less than could be desired.
Over the year I started realizing that I needed a refresh and began working on some ideas. As we head into 2017, this is what I've come up with.
A New Logo
The old logo was flat, lifeless and cheap. I'll admit it. I made it in about 10 minutes and just wanted to get something that was Mars coloured and had some letters on it. When I sat down to make the new logo, I wanted to build something that had some colour and breathe some life in to it. What I've learned this year is that Mars is a dynamic world full of surprises, and I wanted the WeMartians logo to reflect that. I've introduced blue into the colour scheme to give it that pop.
The logo itself is based off a topographic map reduced to a three colour scale. Sharp-eyed Martians might recognize Hellas Basin prominently in the centre.
A New Site
The new site, on a new provider, is simpler and more streamlined. There might still be some bugs, but the idea is a quicker load time, a prettier, more modern look, and a design which gives more emphasis to the podcast. The front page now showcases the most recent episode much more prominently.
The site also has better SEO, and shortcut URLs to make finding an episode easier. You can now navigate to www.wemartians.com/home/001 (where 001 = the three digit episode number) to see the show notes for any episode. This makes sharing on social media much nicer, too (plus, Twitter Card support).
I'm really excited for 2017. I learned a lot in the first year of the podcast and am eager to continue learning about space and Mars as I explore different topics with each and every listener and guest. Thanks for your support so far and I'm honoured to have you come along for the ride. Here's to another year!
